Section 16 Handgun license

Perhaps I read wrong, I was probably thinking of 15 then? I've just read the section on saps.gov.za.

• Supporting documents for sports shooting:
  
  • Proof of participating in sports shooting
  • Written proof of discipline of sports shooting in which the applicant wishes to participate in
  • Proof of belonging to a sports shooting association, club or organisation
  • Success achieved in sports shooting activities
  • Detailed motivation regarding his/her interest in sports shooting.

How would I obtain the above without a firearm, then?
If going to Section 13, is crimstats etc in your area not taken into account? I'm new to this whole thing, and I'm looking at paying a company to do the motivation etc. I want to get into the sport, but unsure where to begin?

I applied under Section 15 which I think is what you want. To support that I did the following:
- Transferred the pistol to my local range
- Signed up as a member of their club
- Joined Natshoot
- Shot the pistol a few times and included copies of the targets in my application
- Asked the club to give me an endorsement letter stating I'm a club member
- Asked Nathoot to endorse my application

That covers your need and I had no problem with my application.

So even when the firearm is at the dealer, if paid in full, you can request a transfer to a club, if they support this function? That way, I can shoot the firearm?

@wernswa - Yes, section 15 is what I will then be applying for. Somehow I misread the 2 sections and thought S16 was the only one for sport... My bad...

So, one can carry the firearm irrespective of the licensed section it falls under. Thanks a ton for the information.

I believe you can obtain Dedicated status without owning a firearm.
If for example you join NHSA online.
And you do the Dedicated test with them.
And go to a range and even use someone else firearm supervised to shoot a couple of sessions.
And send in the targets as required by them.
You ca obtain dedicated status without owning a firearm.

That's what I did. You don't even need someone else's gun under supervision, you could just rent a gun at the range and have the RO sign the NHSA target saying he witnessed you shooting it.
NHSA gives endorsements too, which is nice because it's all online and you just print all the certificates you need for your application.
