Re: Why Spyderco?
I had a look at those Honeybadger knives. Imo they are great value for money if you are looking for a knife that will see hard use that you don't have to feel bad about abusing.
I carry a spyderco delica everyday and it is a great knife for edc. Small, light, sharp and tough but I try to not abuse it too much. For hunting, camping etc.(basically when expecting harder use) I carry my Coldsteel voyager large.
Btw I carry my knives with SD as a last resort in mind and not as primary use.

Re: Why Spiderco?
The guy on Takealot is a third party selling Spyderco's. It's the real deal, but my knife was opened and handled a bit (fingerprints and the likes). Otherwise it's all good. I presume the guy imports them himself?
I cut a box with my one Spyderco (Endura). Let's just say it needs to be sharpened now.

Re: Why Spyderco?
The Tenacious is a good knife, have a look at the Byrd range aswell.
My absolute favorite spydercos for EDC is the delica/endura range. I have the VG10 and H1 versions in both the smaller delica and bigger endura sizes. It is my most recommended folder and has a multitude of uses. I carry one of these versions regardless of the conditions I'm in, Even when swimming in the sea I have an H1 spyderco clipped somewhere.
As a defensive blade, no folder will ever beat a fixed blade for deployment and strength but if you want/need a folder for SD I'd suggest a waved version of some sort.
Please consider a sharpening method aswell. Make a strop and get a decent sharpening system like a lansky or spyderco sharpmaker(there's others but I have experience with those 2).
Another comment previously made that was very valid, "can you afford to replace it". I have a para-military 2 but I'm not to keen on losing it or damaging it so it gets carried less.
Goodluck and enjoy getting into higher end EDC knives!

Re: Why Spyderco?
I own a few Spyderco's which include a Delica, Para 3 and a Dragonfly. If you can afford it, a Delica 4 with a full flat ground blade would best suit your needs, in my opinion. Its a lot of knife for the size. Extremely light weight and low profile, this pocket knife basically disappears in your pocket but is large enough to still be very useful and handle most EDC tasks with ease. If your hesitant to spend 2K on your first pocket knife, also have a look at the Leatherman Crater CL33 pocket knife. I have owned one for about two years and it gets a lot of pocket time. Its a great size and solidly built. It also retails for about R600-00, which is less than a third of the Spyderco Delica.

Re: Why Spyderco?
I can also vouch for the guy selling via Takealot, he is also an enthusiast like us and maybe that's why his grubby paw prints were on your knife; LOL.
He brings them in directly from the USA.
The Bryd knives give good quality with ergonomics and designs just like their Spyderco counterparts.
Also look at a good Swiss Army knife from some real utility, you will be surprised how useful an awl or scissors can be in daily tasks. An a bottle opener of course.

Re: Why Spyderco?
I carry a spyderci civillian. Awesome knife but not at all for chores it does however cut bilting like a champ. For day to day use i have my leatherman skeletool nice blade for chores pliers come in handy sometimes as well as the screwdrivers also aftermarket service is great any problem and it just gets replaced. A friend gave me a engraved swissarmy keychain knife. That actually sees the most day to day use opening boxes cutting biltong digging out splinters etc.
Point is have more than one pointy object for different jobs.

Re: Why Spyderco?
Carry 2 knives always.
1 for fighting and the other for fun.
Spyderco is great. Their knives are well made.
You won't go wrong with a Tenacious, look at the Resilience for a larger folder in same class. If you're prepared to step up a class then look at the Endura 4. This is a work horse and an ideal multitasker.
I bought some Honeybadger knives but after using them grew to really dislike them. For a very cheap alternative that is surprisingly well built look at Ganzo knives. Especially if you're prone to loosing a blade.

Re: Why Spyderco?
I am on my third endura. I have carried them for the last 20 years I think. The first one I lost hunting Francolin in long grass and I think the grass got hold of the plastic clip. Knife gone.
The second one developed a crack in the blade and was replaced with no issues. I am onto the third one and will replace it with same when necessary.
Farmer. Carry it every day and use it very sparingly. Keep it sharp and save the edge for when needed. Have fixed blades in my IFAK, van, workshop for tough tasks.

Re: Why Spyderco?
The scales and liners are shit. Blades are fine though but they saved mega bucks by making the scales and liners so flimsy.
When using my large opener to feather wood I can feel the whole thing flexing in my hand. Not very comforting.
But YMMV.
