Safe with no keys
Hi all
One of my friends moved to Cape Town from Gauteng and he was no longer using his safe so he gave it to me. Problem now is that he cannot find the key, maybe because of the move or he accidentally threw it away. The safe is open. So my questions are:
- Can new keys be made for the existing lock and at what cost?
- Can the lock be replaced and at what cost?
- Where do I go to get help with the above two questions?
I actually want to get rid of it but so will probably put it up for sale as is? One friend actually suggested to take it to a scrap metal yard

Re: Safe with now keys
If you can remove the plate on the back of the door, you should be able to see the lock mechanism. I believe that it's quite common for safes to use a simple lever tumbler lock, similar to what's found in normal doors. If so, replacement should be relatively cheap and easy.

Ok, cool. Thanks a lot, will check.
How much would a safe like this sell for once the lock is fixed?

Re: Safe with no keys
Lock cost me R350 plus installation. Installation is very simple, had I known I would have diy'd it.

Re: Safe with no keys
Herman, why get rid of it?
It is perfect for your 303 and 12 G shotgun.
Take it to a locksmith, and let him replace the lock with a good quality 7 lever lock.
(If the safe is staying at the same address, you don't know who has the keys to the existing lock, and maybe know the address as well.)
Then bolt it to the floor and wall.
Regards

Re: Safe with no keys
I have refitted a few safes with new locks. Unscrew the back plate, take out the locking mechanism and go to your nearest good hardware store. Make sure that the mechanisms are 100% the same, or at least close enough that it will fit.
I bought my safe for R1200 seven or eight years ago. Check on guntree, junk mail etc for prices.

Re: Safe with no keys
The original keys will be found after you have replaced the lock!!
I bought a "locked" safe with no keys. Obviously well priced. Door was jammed shut. After opening, I found the keys inside....

Re: Safe with no keys
Those locks at Brights Electrical Hardware is R80-R100 max.
You can get a Heavy Duty one. But normally does not fit inside these doors.
Plus no need to be. As the lock only restricts the handle mech movement.
