Default Martini-Henry: How much are they worth?

    Three questions:

    1. Assuming that, even though designed for BP, these need the normal white license?

    2. How much are they worth nowadays? I see Classic Arms has some for R4500.

    3. What kind of accuracy can be expected from them at 100y?

Ive got a friend who shoots BP. He has obtained WP colors in BP.
    He owns 2 or 3 Martini's.
Unfortunately he is not on Gunsite.
But if you want. You can PM me. Then I can put you in touch with him.

Because there goes alot into these old Maritini's when it goes towards value and accuracy. Due to barrel design.

Also remember you will not likely get hold of original cases. Some guys who have sell them for +R100 a case.

there is guys making them on a lathe.
But the case inside is different. Straight hole with thick sides, due to made on lathe. So it can not nearly hold enough BP it needs. So they will use modern powder in it. But these cases crack in short time.

Either way. Best is if you want Ill put you in touch with him.

R4500 is a good price if the condition is good. Expect to pay 6-12K for a nice one.
Accuracy is good with the right diametre bullets. At the collectors shoot, some guys repeatedly hit gasbottle targets out to 400 yards.
Cases I form out of 24gauge shotshell brass- I sell them for R40 per case.
Shooting smokeless proppellants take away the fun and might bend the gun.
At R4500 I would buy the gun without seeing it.

I have a few Martini-Henry rifles, simply love them!

All mine on normal white card licence.

Market for them is fairly limited, mostly collectors or anglophiles :)
As Finkelstein said, for price condition is main indicator as is maker & provenance.

Accuracy is fairly good, provided you do your part.
Limiting factor is mostly crude sights on some, and cost of reloading.

    Thanks for the responses guys.

I must say, the idea of a .470 diameter 500 gr lead bullet as BWB medicine appeals to me.

    Sounds like fun.

Gert Odendaal did a thread or three about his MH journey. Some valuable information there.
