Re: Mossberg 500 help
Most mass produced wooden gun stocks are finished in varnish.
In years gone by,upper grade rifles and shotguns were finished with a mixture containing boiled linseed oil in a concoction with melted beezwax and additives to ensure penetration into the wood.A lot of the FA manufacturing houses in England were based in London. This gave rise to the term 'London oil finish'.
This 'oil finish' is labour and time intensive with each application rubbed into the stock by hand. This process would take several weeks to complete and was therefore expensive. The end result is distinctive with a deep lustre or gleam given to the wood as well as really enhancing the grain and pattern in the stock.
Today, several products are available to achieve this finish.Ram produces an 'oil' marketed as London stock oil and another is Schaftol.I think their main ingredient in boiled linseed oil.
Raw linseed oil should not be used as it does not dry but remains tacky.
