Re: Is there an Acid Test for new carry ammo?
Am I imagining or is there a muting of velocities in premium SD ammo these days as compared to 15 + years ago?

Re: Is there an Acid Test for new carry ammo?
I get the feeling that you want to train with your carry ammo on a regular basis. This is really expensive and largely unnecessary.
Most carry ammo is loaded to higher pressures than range ammo and thus have higher wear on your gun. Shooting it when cycling your ammo isn't an issue but extended use can reduce the lifetime of your gun. Granted you will have to shoot quite a bit in quality modern pistols for this to happen.
The second thing is that you probably want to be familiar with how your carry ammo feels. This sounds like a good idea but regular training with regular ammo will be just as valuable as the adrenaline of a defensive shooting would make the difference in loading imperceptible.
It is better to practice more with cheaper(quality) ammo, than less with full power expensive loads.

Re: Is there an Acid Test for new carry ammo?
I train with carry ammo.
The last purchase of ammo made me it SO difficult because it was close to the value of one international ticket and then the pain started ;)
My carry guns must work and if it dies it dies. My reloads are good and as stated earlier I have no prejudice against reloads. My personal rule about hand assembled carry rounds is that brass is brand new and premium bullets. After that you get real close to factory ammo ito of cost.live out your imagination , not your history.

Re: Is there an Acid Test for new carry ammo?
There are no real shortcuts, by most standards 50 rounds is cutting it fine, but can work.
If I have a gun of know reliability with a variety of ammo then 50 rounds of my carry ammo can be enough to make me happy. So if I am changing ammo in a gun I am happy with reliability wise, I will check point of impact at 25m. I will then also run two Gabe White drills for some testing at speed. I will then shoot the remainder with the limpest of wrists weak hand only.
Any failures are unaccpetable, and should a round fail the ammo goes on my NFE list for that gun, unless theres a gun issue that needs fixing.
If its a new gun, I want 3-500 problem free range rounds, then I will shoot a couple smartie box mags of old carry ammo. I also try run a box or two of low price JHP's (magtech or S&B for example) before testing with the carry ammo.

Re: Is there an Acid Test for new carry ammo?
This is more toward "keeping the eye in" sort of with carry. Not a range session as I hardly have time for that these days.
What is a White Drill ? ( =)) )live out your imagination , not your history.
