Re: Converting Shot Shells to Slugs
You should get hunting accuracy out to about 50 yards with a slug in a smoothbore. The more open the choke [less constriction] the better should be your accuracy. Most slugs have a fibre type disc or a lead skirt incorperated in the design to form a gas seal and are designed for smoothbores.
Dedicated 'slug' guns are available with a rifled barrel and front and rear sights which are more accurate...too what extent...i am not sure.
KK20...quote...'Helps for sabots and a 4 inch rifle choke will do well'...unquote. What do you mean by a 4 inch rifle choke?

Re: Converting Shot Shells to Slugs
Is it possible to get a barrel threaded to accept a rifled choke and other chokes?

Re: Converting Shot Shells to Slugs
Tested my conversions this morning. Three shot at 25 metres, 2 cutting each other, the third 2cm away. Very mild recoil. I think perfect for pigs close up.

Re: Converting Shot Shells to Slugs
Hi Guys.
Stupid question I know...just had a 'heavy' Sunday lunch !
But...would I have to remove the chokes before firing slugs from my side by side 12 Gauge ?
Regards.
Keith.

Re: Converting Shot Shells to Slugs
Thanks uncle Rick.
KK..accuracy out to 90,100m is brilliant. Is this with the normal bead up front?
Keith,i would not fire slugs with no choke in the gun.I would use the 2 most open chokes you have.
I have shot a few pigs at close range in the past with an old s/s with full, fixed chokes, but accuracy suffers.
Kayc..sounds like you are winning.

Re: Converting Shot Shells to Slugs
With removeable chokes, there is a risk of the slugs stretching the choke tubes and jamming them in the threads.
With chokes removed, there is a risk of the fine threads getting damaged.
Fixed chokes are generally not affected by slugs.
It is likely prudent to contact the manufacturer of your shotgun and get their recommendation on shooting slugs.
