Tarkastad.....Shoals of baboons over 500 in a troop, absolutely unbelievable numbers.

The chaps cull them from a chopper using shotguns with SG,SSG and Lg. All close range stuff and very effective.

Same as jackal and antelope culling.

But on foot, man where I come from I've heard plenty bosveld guys that wanted to go "shoot" a couple of baboons if their hunts ended early.
    Ja about that........

I've hunted a few, as trophies, with clients, it gets my vote as the most difficult animal to walk and stalk.

Have you witnessed how they relocate when they've made a human but the human take cover?
With antelope you can just relocate and ambush, with these guys it's much like a human sniper game, relocate vs counter-relocate.

I've had a troop send a scout closer to my location JUST to figure out from what angle I am stalking them now.
Clever stuff, more forward thinking than springbok rugby players.

Jeez, that is really a harsh insult to the baboons.

    They were afraid of me.
    It required lots of crawling.

Very interesting feedback, thanks chaps. My house-mate shot one in Namibia two years ago, a scout (perched on top of a windmill) with a well placed .270 round and it jumped straight off the top the windmill and ran a bit. The shot was well placed and it didn't get far. They are very tough from what I've been told.

From what I've heard (on here, actually) is that the only thing that works to get rid of troops (and to prevent them from coming back) is to shoot the young. The older ones, leaders and "brandwagte" are replaced, but they see the taking of young as a serious knock to the troop and often disappear for long periods of time. No idea how accurate this information is, never tried it.

In my experience, shooting the youngsters does seem to be a better deterrent than shooting adults.
