I think that it is acceptable to require closed shoes on a shooting range.
It does not just go about slipping.
The front of a sandal can hook underneath a fault line. Your toes are exposed which means they can be cut if you kick a peg sticking out the ground etc...

If it's the clubs rules and it is being applied to everyone, why not just abide by the decision?

The Rocky “sandals” don’t pose that particular problem. It really is a well-ventilated shoe.

This problem is much more serious than it first seems. As usual someone will try and take this to the extreme and rock up with flip-flops. You know: "They allow sandals, so blah blah blah.". This is the road to caps on backwards and men walking round with their underwear exposed.

But this is nothing compared to the horror of someone rocking up with... Crocs

I have personally witnessed cleavages catching hot doppies. There are usually a whole bunch of guys eager to help the poor damsell in distress... The ladies usually come back with cleavages (and blisters) well covered.

I have also witnessed a hot case getting stuck in a Rocky-type shoe/sandal. Rocky, and the other brands, make quite a few different models and styles, some more open than others. While I love to wear mine in summer, I would not even wear them while shooting a pistol on my private range. Murpy and his friends are everywhere.

Another issue often overlooked, is the possibility of a hot case getting stuck behind your shooting glasses. Wearing a baseball-type cap helps to keep them out of there to some extent. Trust Murpy to find a way.

In the shooting sports where you have a table in front of the shooter (pin shooting for example) he/she can put down the pistol before doing the rain dance. In IPSC, the only way to free your hand is to either re-holster it, or drop it. Both are likely to earn you a DQ. A burning doppie is a real safety risk.

Let’s not forget the most important thing here

You should be thanking the RO for stopping you wearing sandals in public.

Yeah, but the Rockys in the OP are actually rafting sandals and are almost entirely open. But I guess they'll suffer from the other major Rocky problem... stinkvoet!
