This isn't really what puppy socialisation is. At least it isn't the whole of it.

Indeed - which is why I'm looking at training places. I know many (if not all) of them start off with puppy socialization classes in groups of people and individually - this is what I'm after. It evolves into proper, "formal" training later on.

The problem with training is that the industry is very poorly regulated. I have been to some classes that are downright scary. I would echo SSPs comments strongly - contact SADTC and ask for a recommendation

Will do. I found the Pretoria Shepherd Dog Club near-ish to me, but I was hoping for recommendations. Will jump on the SADTC wagon for sure though - not taking chances with this pup. Potential is there, I need to play my cards right with her.

PS: GSD pups are INCREDIBLY whiny and have BIG personalities, it's hilariously awesome. If she's been bad, like she dug a hole in the lawn, I'll go crouch by it and call her over. She'll KNOW she's been wrong and she'll come walking to me all apologetic and whining even without me saying a word. Then when I scold her she'll sit there and not look at me until I'm done. When done I'll talk to her in a nice voice again and then she'll try to cuddle the crap out of me, like climb on my lap and wag her tail and whine very excitedly. Her personality really comes close to the husky's, and I love that. :D

I love German Shepherds, sad though their hips go, had to put one down and now the boy's hips is going too. Breaks my heart.

Unfortunately the breed is prone to it. And as SSP has said, shitty local breeding practices have made the situation even worse. An ethical breeder will do everything they can to keep HD out of their gene pool and will go to great lengths to show you this

We train at the Pretoria Shepherd Dog club and there are multiple national competitors in IPO, agility and other dog sports also training there.

I didn't recommend them as they ate quite far from you. Mail Tania the chairperson and have a chat.

They'll have a new intake in January. You'll start woth the puppy class which is more about socialization and teaching you to train a dog and laying foundations for later on when the good stuff starts.

And PS, a registered German Shepherd means absolutely nothing. Our trainer has on paper the best working dog money can buy, but her hips are fucked at 3 years old. She now got a Malinois for working. I have yet to find the exception that doesn't act like a crazy possessed chainsaw on meth.
