The reality of an SLR for SD in South Africa.
I have been thinking , the actual role of an SLR for self defense. Realistically, what's the chances of one actually using one in a self defense scenario. The few times I had to respond to my alarm going on, there was ZERO time to open the safe for a long gun. But we get caught up in tricking out our ARs but may neglect our handgun training and upping our skills. It's more likely we will have a handgun available on us..
Now I'm not saying it doesn't have a role, but do we focus too much on cool guy gear like lights etc when we could rather focus more on handgun skills for SD. Not focusing on sport shooting here, I'm purely talking about "home defense" set ups. For example, I bought my SLR before my second handgun. In hindsite I would first buy a second handgun then consider a long gun. What are your thoughts?

Good topic. I agree, realistically handguns are going to be the tools at hand in the vast majority of circumstances.

Your first gun should be a carry gun.
Your second gun should be a gun you can carry.
Your EBR is realistically for what ever sport you bought it for.

Living in a city I would have a pistol as my SD firearm.
Living on a farm or remote rural areas I would do everything in my power to have a Section 14 MSR as my SD firearm.Last edited by DS; 29-11-2017 at 12:30.

This thread will only proceed on the understanding that the SLR discussed has been or is sought to be, licensed specifically for self-defense purposes. Any suggestion to the contrary will attract unfavourable attention from the moderators. The point of the discussion is whether it makes sense to seek to license an SLR for SD or not. It will also be borne in mind that only a single handgun may be licensed for SD.

I must agree with you Daniel, mine has become a bit of a safe queen.
Even when you do get the late night call outs, it sometimes a hassle getting in out bakkies opening gates .......
Must admit I definitely need to train more with it, not so much the shooting but just moving about .

But then I must admit if the AK'S come out, it's nice to also have something extra.
The problem is you never bought it for sport and in my case sport shooting is mostly pistol so more time is spent on pistols.

only way i would justify a SLR for SD is if i was on the farm
considering that some of our farmers/rural homesteads face , makes sense to me
I would 100% have at least 1 SLR in the homestead licensed for SD

Trying to get my Father-in-law to apply for a section14 SLR. He farms close to the Lesotho border and an hour drive from town.
Would he still be allowed a Section 13 pistol?
He had more than 500k worth of cattle stolen in the last two years and patrol at night over weekends and especially full moon as that is the cattle thieves window of opportunity.
Anyone applied successfully for a section14 firearm, please send me a pm.
