I went with an LM5 (approved, still waiting for card...).
There were 2 compelling reasons for my selection:
1. Nostalgia
There is no proper logical rationale behind this, except to say that I have always wanted one. I also believe nostalgia is responsible for most 1911 sales worldwide
2. It was free
Nothing more to say here.
But if I had to save up and buy an SLR, I would go for a nice AR. The Colt looks really nice...

The OP title should read Starter AR and then go from there. OP there is great info deseminated already, hope you follow it and let us know how you go (pics are good)
