Johannesburg - A 32-year-old farm worker was shot and killed, allegedly by his employer, on a farm in Tarlton, outside Krugersdorp, over the weekend.
Details of the alleged murder were still vague.
However, police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela confirmed to News24 that the incident happened on January 6.
"The farmer phoned the police and told them that he shot a farm worker who stole his tractor. The police went to the farm and found the farm worker," Makhubela said.
Before police arrived, some of the farm workers attacked the farmer and also damaged his vehicle, Makhubela added.
The farmer fled the scene, but handed himself over to the police later on Saturday.
Murder charge
He has been charged with murder.
Pictures of the farm worker, who lay in a pool of blood on the tractor, has since been shared widely on social media.
Some claimed he was killed for using the tractor to fetch lunch from his house.
" Killed....Killed.....Killed. Black farm worker who is a tractor driver killed by the farm owner. Just because he used the tractor during lunch to go get something for him to eat."
"His death might not be in the mainstream media because of obvious reasons. A breadwinner, father, uncle, brother was killed," a Facebook post from Sediko Rakolote read.
Gauteng MEC for economic development, environment agriculture and rural development, Lebogang Maile, has sent his condolences to the family of the farm worker.
Maile said the killing of farm workers painted an "ugly picture of racialised violence".
"[This] latest spate of killings of farm workers [is] not only worrying, but concerning. They seek not only to undermine the reconciliation project, but our efforts of building a non-racial country that truly belongs to all, both black and white."
The alleged killer appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Re: Article: Farm worker shot dead near Krugersdorp for allegedly stealing tractor
Further to the News24 article, Conserv Security has placed this report on its Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/conservsec/
IR 33265 Tarlton Gauteng RSA 06 January 2018. Another irresponsible report stirring Racial Hate! In a News 24 report it writes "ugly picture of racialised violence". See link below. https://www.news24.com/…/farm-worker-shot-dead-near-krugers…
It is crucial that the incident and facts are correctly reported. Herewith a summary of events as our investigation shows. The deceased farm worker (irrespective of his race) was shot and died as a result of stealing a tractor. Our sincere condolences to the family and all who knew him. The farm worker arrived at his previous work place earlier the day, after he had absconded the week before. He was requested to leave the premises after which he became aggressive and got into an altercation with his colleagues. Shortly thereafter the previously employed farm worker claimed that he was the legit tractor driver stole the tractor with a trailer and left from Muldersdrift area to Tarlton, more than 20 kilometres away, where he was eventually was shot.
He was riding recklessly on the N14, a very busy National Road. The farm Management requested their security company to trace the tractor after it was learnt that it had been stolen. The security company eventually came upon the tractor and trailer close to the Matshelapad Settlement. After numerous attempts to stop and encourage the illegal driver to pull over by the security company, the driver succumbed to his wounds. The un informed local black Community turned on the security officer because he was white, over turned his vehicle, turned the incident into a racial incident and threatened him.
The former employee illegally took the tractor (without permission) road it recklessly 20 kms on a national road, and refused to stop. The Farmer Owner was not present at any stage, their security company was summoned to retrieved their vehicle. It is a sad day in that irresponsible reporting has fuelled this into a racial incident, Farmers are once again being accused as the aggressor, whilst it all started with the theft of a Farmer’s tractor. Let the law take its course.

Wow two totally different stories. They could be from different planets. The second story does sound more plausible and with more verifiable facts.

I know of the farm owner, he was nowhere near when this incident happened.
Must have been a serious lunch for him to avoid a security vehicle, flatten a lamp post and drive 20km down the road

Re: Article: Farm worker shot dead near Krugersdorp for allegedly stealing tractor
Stirring up racial hatred is becoming a national pass time. It also goes both ways. FB is full of post of the “black savages” that raped and killer the two woman from Mooinooi recently but no one mentions the white neighbor that planned the attack because they refused to sell their land to him.
