Re: cost of shotshell reload
24 is more than enough for pigeon and clays esp if you are just practicing. As far as loading goes I reload for about R650 a case using 26g of lead and 24gn of S121. Wads are R350 for 1000 and lead shot you can get for about R45/kg

Re: cost of shotshell reload
Where can I find good lead? Or even lead shot?
Would like to load 12 Gauge but Buckshot and slugs as the savings there might be a little more substantial.
Any comments as to using low brass shells for slugs and buckshot?
Cheers

Re: cost of shotshell reload
I did some math from my end.
Haven't bought the press etc yet so was just looking at the component costs.
Found wads (24 - 32 gram) R300 / 1000
No 7.5 shot R300 / 5kg
Primers R370 / 600
Lead (ready for bullet casting so maybe overkill) R32 / kg
So if my math is right, assuming you use a 24 gram shot load and a 28grain S121 load (yes its very high but I wanted to budget on the upper side), a bird shot round works out to:
R 3.36
Primer: R0.62
Wad: R 0.30
Shot: R 1.44
Powder: +/- R1.00
For slugs it seems better (7/8 ounce slug):
R 2.67
Primer: R0.62
Wad: R 0.30
Slug: R 0.75
Powder: +/- R1.00
Also noticed Blaser makes a high brass 7.5 birdshot load. Shells might be nice for loading buckshot and slugs later.

Re: cost of shotshell reload
Where can I find shot for that price?
On the S121, Somchem gives no information about s121 for the lighter loads. I just took the 28 grain load to calculate the cost per round whilst knowing its more than I would need.
I do see loads of 32 grain for 24 gram loads using mp200. When looking at the 32gram loads the s121 seems to be about 5grain less.

Re: cost of shotshell reload
I sell shot at that price
The following loads where all shot in an industrial pressure/velocity test machine.
MS200 with 28g shot
23gr - 1340 FPS (recoil heavy but not excessive)
22gr - 1300 FPS (nice load)
21.5gr - 1280 FPS (factory spec)
No need to shoot such heavy loads.
I’ve even gone over to a 24g Load with 20gr MS200 at 1300 FPS for practice, and shot a straight 25 at Waterhaven (Compak)
