    Default Lynx LRS-800 Range Finder

I may have some few Randelas coming my way from SARS... and a rangefinder looks to be a useful exchange for my hard work

Common wisdom seems to be that in-field max useable distance is about half of advertised max. Where scopes are concerned I'm getting excellent results from entry-level Nikons, and I considered the Nikon Aculon rangefinder, but that has a 500m max advetised range, so in the first analysis we'll call that 250m in-field max range.

Next up on the price bracket is the Lynx Ranger LRS-800

    http://www.lynx.co.za/catalog/access...r-rangefinder/

with "800" denoting he max range in meters (say then 400m in-field).
Looks like Lynx only distributed these, they don't make them. Does anyone have experience with the product?

    Thanks in advance.

Also shopping for a rangefinder. On the archery groups, most people seem to recommend Nikon. Any idea on the lynx warranty?

Lynx has a very good reputation in South Africa. The Nikon's 500m max limit probably isn't an issue for archery...

I have no experience with the Lynx. The Nikon, a friend used one here, struggles to range springbok past 200m. Ok, for bow and handgun hunting but not much use for plains hunting.

Don't have any experience with the Lynx model, but can echo what Tstone said about the Nikon. Almost impossible to range animal past 200m.

Upgraded to Sig, easily range to 500m under hunting conditions. Same results with Leica. Rather spend a bit more and get a Sig or Leica.

I think the Nikon is model dependent. In reviews it seems the Aculon, which is the entry level model has trouble past 200m. The pro staff range seems to do better

    Good advice this ^^^

I do like Lynx a lot, mostly due to their excellent after sales service. However, one should know that they don't actually manufacture anything. They are a marketing company.

Leica and Sig rangefinders are good performers. A bit pricey maybe, but there are no free lunches.

(I still would not drop-test either.)

    Pirate.
I use the Lynx Ranger model you mention.
I have had it for about 5 years now. No issues whatsoever.
I like the fact that you have the different modes which can negate rain drops and any objects closer than 150 meters.
I have not had any problems ranging Gemsbok/Hartebees size animals at 400 meters . It's a good value for money rangefinder.
