You are quite correct, it is a shame these Afrikaner oxen is starting to fade away to become part of a long gone era...

Gert, as a complete neophyte on the subject of oxen, are horns a necessary prerequisite or can polled cattle be used too?

No, horns are not a prerequisite for oxen to be acceptable as oxen. The Afrikaner oxen was a symbol of the Voortrekker trek era where they used Afrikaner oxen since they were adapt to any harsh environment and were big , strong and tough..It is much easier to use Percheron horses since they are easier to work with and are really strong...but only Afrikaner oxen /indigenous cattle was available in those times...so the tradition continuous... it is a grand sight to see when twelve fully grown Afrikaner oxen are pulling a freight ox wagon

Imagine you have twelve of these oxen in front of an ox wagon..

Here is a photo or two of the Percheron horses..

I like that blade as well as the antler handle. Are the 'rustic' indentations (pitting) man-made or the result of rusting in the metal beforehand?

Good to hear from you Patocazador, no, I made those indents with a hammer to give it a full forging look...this is a leaf spring steel...I used to make this blade. The antler horn really give it som nice touches...
