Firearm barrel cleaning - is it necessary?
Hi all I recently received my 12 gauge pump action shotgun and fired 5 rounds at a shooting range. I want to ask is it necessary to clean the barrel after firing? I also received my Beretta 9mm handgun and fired 15 rounds at a shooting range, I did clean the handgun with the provided cleaning kit but would also like to know if its necessary to clean the handgun after using it? Thank you in advance, Armed1

Re: Firearm barrel cleaning - is it necessary?
If you want to clean it, do it. My shotgun I only clean every 200 rounds as per manufacturer guidelines.
Handgun I only clean every few 1000 rounds.
I do wipe it down with oil more often and lube rails when required.
I am not OCD, so only do it when needed.

Re: Firearm barrel cleaning - is it necessary?
I shoot competitive Claypigeon.
So the over under gets minor wadd fowling on the chokes. After a shoot I merely pull through a boresnake with little Ballistol sprayed at end of Boresnake.
Also just wipe outside of metal before into safe.
Maybe every 5th time ill do a more thorough clean with a rod.
Same with my 9mmP. Boresnake after shoot but no oil through barrel.
Ive ordered several Boresnakes from Aliexpress.com. Comes branded as Hoppes Boresnakes. Varies $4 - $6. They work brilliant. And even if maybe chinese fake.
Its just a rope with copper brush in. And im still using the same one after 3 years.

Re: Firearm barrel cleaning - is it necessary?
Let's just say i shoot a lot,as in most weekends and often during the week as well.
Shoot lots of shotgun...clays once a month,exept on away comps.,then twice a month,then geese,quail,rockies,guinies and then IPSC shotgun,3 gun shoots ect.ect.
Handgun..IPSC,steel challenge...pretty much a newbie to these but the bug has bitten...also handgun hunting, practice ect .ect
Rifle...big bore,veldskiet,hunting,grouping comps.,long range,IPSC rifle.
Firearm barrel cleaning-is it necessary?..The answer is yes...The question should be...how often?
Me,i am that old Oom that has become fixed in his ways and continues to do some things the same as he did 45 years ago.I cannot use a firearm, any firearm and place it back in the safe without cleaning it,and that includes the barrel.[exception of .22's barrel]
My cleaning regimen is nothing complicated, just a solvent soaked patch followed by a bronze brush, followed by the solvent patch turned around, klaar. Sometimes i will follow with a clean patch and then a lightly oiled one if the firearm will not be in use for a month or two.
They then get a proper strip down once or twice a year and cleaned, lubed properly.
Fire 5 centre fire rifle shots,a box of shotgun ammo or a couple of mags full of 9mm and have a look what the barrel looks like....No man,i clean it before i put it away.
