Land occupiers set building alight with family inside

Carrie Esterhuizen and her two small children were in the hostel at the Cremona Cheese Factory in Tshepisong‚ Johannesburg‚ when angry land occupiers set the building alight on Friday afternoon‚ May 25.

Occupiers have said they need the land because they can no longer afford to pay rent as they are unemployed. They say the land had been vacant for 23 years and is a safety concern because there is no fence and the grass is long.

I have a question, perhaps a stupid one. Where did these people came from? Where did they live previously, not under a bridge I'm sure? So they just packed up wherever they where allready living, to grab land elsewhere? As if they are just following instructions?

Close to where I live there is a stone quarry with a gravel access road off the main tar road. Good couple of months ago all of a sudden a horde of people/trucks/vehicles with (for lack of a better word-) scrap metal and building rubble invaded the road, burned the verge next to the road and started putting up their structures. There were a few informal traders with makeshift shops -selling snacks to the quarry truck drivers- that were simply chased off.

Where did they come from..? They were chased away from the informal settlement [IS] where they have been staying for the last 4something years. They were not part of the original 'tribe' of people occupying that part of the IS, and due to expansion and land needs of the larger established group they were simply chased off. Overnight..

(This group on the access road was removed within 24hours by the police and municipality, and rehoused at another IS).

Often vacant land is parceled up by some dudes and sold to backyard shack dwellers. The back yarders are renting, everybody pays rent after all, and want their own shacks to own and have back yard shacks to rent out.

These guys selling do so by selling for cash and wonder off with packets of cash, depending on the size of the land, can even be in the millions, just in a day or two.

    Organized crime is often involved.

"One participant said that while white people might ask what it is that black people want to do with the land, the question didn't matter as the land rightfully belonged to black people. "

I personally think the whole idea of public hearings is a farce.

I monitored the situation in most of our townships here.
For example 100% of the residents in Thaba Nchu was in favor of amending section 25.

It's like when there are 1 omnivore and 9 cannibals on an island and asking the majority to vote what is for dinner.
People simply don't understand food and money doesn't come from land.
