Re: 9mm Carbine or .223 Tactical
A semi-auto rifle/carbine for self defence requires pretty strong motivation and licence is only valid for 2 years so you will have to repeat the process regularly. If you're not in a position to do such a motivation, maybe consider a .357 or .44 magnum lever action carbine. Quicker to work than a bolt action and both calibres are suitable for shooting in/through heavy bush at ranges up to 70-100 metres, particularly the .44, with +/- 50% more velocity than the same ammo in a 6 inch revolver. Hollow point bullets very effective on soft targets. Also more compact than a typical bolt action rifle. Will be a whole lot easier to motivate than a semi.

Re: 9mm Carbine or .223 Tactical
Considering that they seem to often pitch up with gubbermunt guns and other equipment, it is not too far fetched to expect them to pitch up at a farm with a BPV either.
Sometimes we have to work with what can be expected, not with what has already happened, although that should be included in the possibility list.
So I think it definitely is something to consider and plan for.
