Which shotgun NOT to buy?
Just out of interest:
Which brands and/or types of shotgun does one not buy for general purpose usage?

Actually you should not buy any over under intended for ClayPigeon use.
Because once you start shooting clay pigeon. You dont get time to shoot anything else.

Re: Which shotgun NOT to buy?
Ds J...general purpose usage possibly needs a better definition.
I use a shotgun for 3 gun competition...not general use but rather specialised.
I then use another shotgun for what i deem to be general use. Clay target shooting, trap, skeet and sporting. Geese mostly incoming birds over decoys. Rockies mostly screaming past at mach 2. Quail walked up mostly close going away shots. Guinies mostly as oppurtunity presents itself. Partridge over dogs. Bushpigs now and then normally within 10m.
For this, the best bet would be an over and under. Multi chokes and single selective trigger would be nice.
I could tell you of a couple of side by sides and singles to avoid but they are not what you want...there are also a few shitty pumps and semis.
No...buy an over and under, spend between 22 and 30k and you are set for life. Or look for a bargain.

I must laugh because I have been waiting and fearing this. Allow me to rephrase: if a noob wants a rifle for the odd hunt and occasional range session we tell him to get a Howa in 308. For pistols the usual answer is G19 or P07.
I do not want to get involved in anything serious with shotguns but having a shottie in the safe for the odd guinea fowl or piggie or clay session cannot hurt.
So I start looking around at second hand shotguns and realise I know too little about them. I am not worried about O/U or S/S or semi. As long as shot goes out the front I am more than happy.
Thus my question: what do I not even consider? And by implication: what makes for a usable shotgun?
In the end finances would play a big role but I have no haste. Something for R6000 is probably realistic once I get the competency done.

Re: Which shotgun NOT to buy?
I really do not think that there is a 'Howa 308' of shotguns.
You would definately find within your budget a good used pump such as a Mossberg 500 [stock standard with wooden stock is the one].
Semi auto....look for a good used Beretta A300.
Side by side....avoid.
Over and under....with a bit of time you could find something like a good used Franchi or similaR.

Re: Which shotgun NOT to buy?
My LGS has a semi-auto Turkish "Armed" shotty in stock for under R6k. It is brand new. It has a fibre optic front and ghost ring rear sights, along with some picanini rails for mounting RDS and torch, and a removable "flash hider" on the barrel. It can be fitted with screw-on chokes, if you can find or make them. This is about as "general purpose" at it gets.
It is not a Benelli M4, but does not cost as much either. If it breaks, you might have to scrap it and buy a new one.
I have seen some O/U guns at around R6-8k. Also Turkish made. Not sure how good they may be.
Then we have the pump actions going from around R4k upwards. Also quite "general purpose" I think?
