Para bellum means Prepare for war (if you want peace, prepare for war)

    Welcome Ralph.

Believe it or not but I signed my successful motivation for my Glock 19 off with the following:

A student said to his master: "You teach me fighting, but you talk about peace. How do you reconcile the two?"

The master replied: "It is better to be a warrior in a garden than to be a gardener in a war. "

I am waiting for my competency certificate to come through and have purchased a Glock 19 in the meantime. As soon as I am licensed I would like to start competing under the ipsc rules. See you all around on the fora...and maybe at the range! :D
Not sure what kind of lawyer you were/are, since there's also the field of peaceful arbitration.

But I always found it difficult to bring the stated beliefs and chosen vocation or profession of "pacifists" together.

They commonly were teachers, academics (at tax funded institutions), officials getting a salary from taxation etc.

Do they realize that the state actually uses the threat of or real violence against people that refuse to pay the taxes imposed on them by the respective governments? And yes, when they resist they also would ultimately kill them.

If they weren't paid from tax funds, they'd still call the cops or go to court, if they became victims of crimes or felt treated wrongfully. Again, that involves the threat or actual use of violence.

    Anyway, welcome to the forum!

Pacifist is such an interesting word. i presume that the "paci" derives from the Latin for peace and then we have "fist". Guess it means if you want peace sometimes you have to fight for it.
