    Is the carry handle removable?

Yes it is. The one they have available to shoot has an optic mounted to it.

Wait a bit... save a bit... buy something better...

These might prove to be ok in the long run but I'm not willing to be a guinea pig.

Sometime we buy stuff that is fun to shoot. Like the M&P 15/22.

Heresy! It must all be for a specific purpose and preferably the most expensive. Else one is just not dedicated enough. Guns are serious stuff after all...

He did mention home defence. That’s pretty serious

Yes and we both know that in reality the probability of ending up with our plastic people poppers in our hands in a HD situation is far greater than running for a long gun. So for the general not-living-on-a-farm guy I honestly take supposed HD purposes of a long gun (and the associated huge spend in money, that could rather be invested on improving handgun skills) with a huge sack of sodium chloride.

But buying a gun that is fun to shoot, affordable, and COULD be pressed into service as a secondary purpose, yes, that I do get.

The threat of mass invasion of one's home is not that far fetched considering what has been in the news recently. A long gun would be useful.

I know my reality will almost definitely involve what ever blaster I was carrying that day. I don’t know about the OP. Some people are a lot less lazy than me about these things.

What I do know is that I wouldn’t want to ever press something like this into use for HD if I had a choice.

He can have great fun with a quality pump gun.

The amount of swear words and annoyance shown by guys with magazine fed shotguns that I have witnessed, they are not always fun to shoot

And after a while, not affordable after all the work that needs to be done on them.

So a serious question then. I have a mate of mine who actually owns a 1301, hence I'm quite familiar with it. I've seen him shoot 5 plates at Steel Challenge in 1.5sec, how in the world do you compete with that sort of speed in a 3 Gun match using a basic pump?
