Use a range finder to judge distance, especially for someone not very experienced.
What application are you looking at - long range shooting, target shooting, normal hunting?

Your application will determine how you use the scope.

For normal hunting purposes you do not need to adjust anything on the scope.

    - get one cartridge which you want to use for hunting
    - set the rifle to shoot at 200m with that cartridge
    - shoot at 100m and 300m to see where the point of impact is
    - when hunting you use the small dots on the scope instead of the cross hairs

Do you understand how bullet drop is measured using MOA or Mrad?

There are 3 ways to compensate for bullet drop.

    1. Holdover, where you aim higher for the bullet to drop to your intended point of impact. You would have to estimate how much holdover is required.

    2. Holdover using a ballistic reticle in your scope. You would have to know beforehand how your bullet trajectory coincides with the hash marks along the vertical post on your scope. For a second focal plane scope the magnification at which the distances are calculated are specific to that magnification setting. If you dial the magnification up or down, the relationship between bullet drop and the corresponding marks will change. (This is not so for first focal plane scopes.)

    3. Dialing your elevation after calculating how much the bullet will drop.

How do you intend doing it?
