Re: Great Music
If you liked Two Steps From Hell, you should also check out Danny Cocke and Brand X Music. Both also create "movie music", so to speak, and it's quite epic :P

Re: Great Music
Too bombastic and lacking in dynamics for me personally. It's like everything is full tilt.
These guys do a ton of trailer music and music for games.
Just in case you have interest......this is all done using virtual instruments....sample libraries-essentially being input using a MIDI keyboard controller into recording software in a computer, or with music notation software in a computer. Not a real orchestra. It's very good, just that the recording is harsh ....like no dynamic range....super squished brick wall limiting. Maybe the recording was compressed to high hell when it was mastered, which is typical these days.... or perhaps when uploading to YouTube. I don't know...I just find it harsh on the ear.
Nick Phoenix is one half of 2 Steps and he also works with sample library companies like EastWest. I have a bunch of their stuff...including the Symphonic Orchestra Platinum Edition which I think I paid about $800 for. It's not cheap stuff.....but it is among the best. I think Two Steps From Hell are using it. That and percussion software like StormDrum and StormDrum II which I have as well-also EastWest. I think they input with keyboards rather than notation software. I have Sibelius music notation software......it's incredibly difficult to use well. I have never mastered it. MIDI is such a huge part of music production it is amazing what can be done by a guy or two sitting at a computer a digital production studio.
These guys are very good and they must make a freakin' killing selling their stuff for use in the big movie trailers alone.
If you are interested at all....check out the tracks Pillars Of Silk and MicroQuartet at the EastWest Symphonic Orchestra Platinum site below. The full name is EastWest Quantum Leap...EWQL. Another one showing good use of dynamics is American Dream. It sounds like he has Symphonic Choirs on there...another of EWQL's libraries I have. You can type in words and the choir will sing it back. Not as simple as that but that's what it does.
http://www.soundsonline.com/symphonic-orchestra Scroll down to Listen To Demo's.
It is my understanding there are now other libraries out there that might be better. I know Vienna Symphonic stuff is extremely good, always has been.....it can also go as high as $5000.
