what material for scope base shim in-place
I need to mould a shim in place for a 1946 model 70.
The rear of the receiver has the right side elevated in relation to the left, and is concave on top.
What can I use to "cast" a shim in place that will serve as the rear rail mount surface.
Thickness will vary from 0.5 to just over 1mm.
The alternative is to have the scope base milled to match the receiver.

I have used Brass shim.
You can get them from 0.1mm in just about any thickness you can think of
Company in CPT/Montague Gardens has bin with off cuts you can usually take out for free.

Masking it is going to be tricky and getting the boxing right, so that it looks professional, just as difficult. Steenvas could do it for you. Remember release agent! Everywhere!

Re: what material for scope base shim in-place
I do not know about shims which is taper. If you only put a shim on the one side the mounting would not be very stable and the shim would tend to work itself out. I think the scope base machining idea would be the best idea but it would not be a easy "bring a grinder with a flapper disc and a vice grip" job.

Re: what material for scope base shim in-place
Long term, I would have the base milled.
I had a brass shim in for a long time. It works, and there is no problem with it, but over time it just started looking crappy and like it's about to pop out.
