    Default Hunting farm animals

Early this morning we went out to cull Cattle that had been left on a farm and never worked, they were to wild to get closer than 100m. No worries I had my trusty 6.5x55 and Oom Lou had his 270 win, should have been simple and easy. It was relatively easy and simple but not without issues. I took the first shot at a big bull, aimed for the brain and took the shot with a Sierra 120gr Pro-Hunter. Shot hit exactly where it was supposed to, but the bull just shook his head and ran away. A little over a km later and a second shot followed at the back of the head, the bull went to its knees but kept walking. The third shot brought it down and it died. Second bull was shot with 270 win, shot placement was better than mine with the swede, and yet the bull got back up and prepared to charge, second shot brought it down. We were certain it was dead, but as we approached it started getting back up, a shot to the back of the head delivered by the swede killed the bull. Lastly shot a bull calf at 110m with the swede, first shot put it down, but a second shot was delivered just to be sure. All in all a productive morning, but it taught me that so-called domestic animals can be darn tough.

After today I believe that, I'm even going to invest in ballistic tip bullets.

I would love to hunt a cow. Where can one do such a thing?

If you are willing to pay same price as abattoir many farmers should be willing.

I had a very embarrassing time put a cow down for a farmer a few years back...I get cold sweats thinking if having to do it again.

Feral cattle are extremely tough critters to hunt. I personally would take a 375 of some sort when doing such a hunt.

If you don't have a large bore available at least use a premium bonded or mono bullet.

I really don't think that ballistic tips are going to make a difference.

Won't penetration be a bit better?
