    Default Old Tasco 3-9x40.

Somewhere around 1995 I bought a brand new 3-9x40 Tasco (Made in Japan) and mounted it on my 7x57. I hunted with it for several years, until I was able to afford "better" scopes. For the past ten years it had alternated between lying in a cupboard and doing duty on a Gamo CFX air rifle.

Recently a friend of my brother's asked about an affordable scope, affordable as in free, and I thought about the Tasco again. I mounted it on my 6.5x55 Howa, bore sighted it and took it to the range. To my surprise it was sighted in within three shots, it is not as clear as my other scopes but as long as the power is at 6 or lower it is certainly clear enough to hunt with. Looks like it is time to get a proper air rifle scope and let the old Tasco go hunting again, with a new owner.

I was given one of these when I bought my Howa 308. Works perfectly, so never was upgraded.

Pre 1998 Tasco Scopes were made by Hakko in Japan. Optics were up there with the best.

I'm most impressed by the fact that it survived the CFX....

I have heard this before, why would an air rifle be harder on a scope than a hunting rifle?

TStone, it is to do with the reverse recoil generated by the spring driving the piston, most scopes just can't handle it, even though felt recoil is much less than a centre fire rifle.

To be more precise, the forward recoil impulse when the piston slams to a stop. Few scopes can survive that for long, except if they were specifically made for spring piston air rifles.

I'm guessing the opposite would also be true, a scope designed for spring piston air rifles won't survive on a center fire rifle?
