    It's a curious example of planning being overtaken by events on the ground.

    By the time the first Galils were issued (1981), we were already being issued with the M79 (Snotneus). I was operational from August 81 onwards (Ops Protea) and never saw an R4 being used to launch a grenade after that time.

    In fact, I carried an R4 AND a Snotneus throughout Protea.

    The damned RG791 was also why we ended up lugging the R4 around instead of the R5 which would have saved a kilo or so, and was more effective because of the lighter weight.

    Just as the Energa rifle grenade was why the SA Para FALs ended up with 21" barrels instead of the far more effective, and international standard, 18" barrels.
