110 gr hornedy vmax for hunting [308]
Hi
I have search this site for info on hunting with 110gr vmax's and cant find any.
I load my bullets with 48.03gr s335 and it gives me 3145fps out of my 308'.
Now my question is....What can be hunted with these bullets except for vermin.
Some other forums suggests it can even be used for blou wildebees ,but I am more interestad in headshots that this can be used for.
Any info will be great

Squirrels. And Springbok, if you want to do the shooting and mincing in one go.
Seriously, I'd avoid anything lighter than 150gr (apart from 130gr monos perhaps, although even then I'd use 150gr...) for any serious type of hunting.

Re: 110 gr hornedy vmax for hunting [308]
I know a few people using this combo, including myself. I have taken a Kudu bull with a 110gr. (went shooting springbuck and a kudu presented itself where kudu are not supposed to be found) If you know your rifle and know where to shoot...... your load is above max for the 110gr! Max is 46,5gr S335. I have dropped from 46,5gr too 44,0gr and I'm at abt 2975fps.

You will not find much written about the 110gr Vmax as far as hunting suitability is concerned because it is not a hunting bullet.
You then say you are more interested in head shots?
.Not to be confused with hunting
.Yes it would kill any plains game animal if shot in the brain....proffesional cullers do it,yet there is a vast array of calibers and bullet choices more suitable for culling than this.
Do not use this bullet on Blue Wildebeest, besides being totally unsuitable it is also illegal in most provinces.

Re: 110 gr hornedy vmax for hunting [308]
Savage according to Q load im still below the red and my obt is spot on. This load made me decide to forget about a 6.5 creed m. Have done about 300 rounds on the range and every time it performance great.I think i will stick to my 150 sierras for hunting....for now
pre 64 I agree ...the wright tool for the right job.
Thanks for all your input

Re: 110 gr hornedy vmax for hunting [308]
I have heard of guys culling zebra with 75 / 87 gr 243 v-max and even 37 gr v-max in 204 Ruger.
In the Karroo a lot of hunters especially locals use v-max bullets for springbok. (head shots)
I find this unethical for anyone except the most experienced hunters who get lots of practice. On a recent hunt I saw a springboks lower jaw shot off. Luckily it was shot by another hunter.

Re: 110 gr hornedy vmax for hunting [308]
To be fair, all he asked was if it would work, and the answer to that is very well.
Unethical have nothing to do with the question, unethical depends on who uses it and under what circumstances.
But the straight answer, yes that bullet will kill everything dead very reliably when used for headshots.
Perhaps not the best tool for the job, since the BC of any 110gr bullet in 308 is extremely poor, and any wind will blow that thing around like crazy.
But if I had to cull something, or hunt at closer ranges, I'd use that bullet any day of the week.

The 110gn V-max may be suitable for head shots. What it may struggle with is BRAIN shots, depending on the species and shot angle. Some species have quite a bit of bone and tissue in front of the brain that may be too much for this very fragile bullet to penetrate, leaving you with badly a wounded but very mobile animal.
