Re: 44 mag ammo ID please
That looks like something else, the 44 mag brass was necked down. What is the bullet diameter and case length?

Re: 44 mag ammo ID please
Looks like a 44 wildcat. 44 necked down to a 38. They tried stuff like that years ago, but there were issues with reliability. They were used in revolvers

Re: 44 mag ammo ID please
At first it looked like a .357 SIG, but that is based on the 10 mm case. Perhaps it is the .357/44 Bain & Davis?

Re: 44 mag ammo ID please
I have a Speer reloading manual no 9 of 1974. The closest they feature to this is the 256 Winchester. The dimensions are not the same, except for case length being equal.

Re: 44 mag ammo ID please
The .357 Auto Mag comes close to your measurements. The only thing is that your cartridge is clearly necked down from a .44 Magnum case, and the .357 Auto Mag (at least from the sketch below) is not a rimmed cartridge. But this sketch seems to very closely match your measurements:
UPDATE:
I have found the .357/44 Bain & Davis dimensions. They seem to match your measurements. The sketch below indicates that the case length of the .357/44 Bain & Davis is 1.280 x 25.4 = 32.512 mm, which is on par with what you have measured on your cartridge:
So I think that is what you have there.
An interesting little piece of info on the caliber at this link.Last edited by wave.jaco; 25-07-2018 at 09:45. Reason: Updated with more and correct info and links.
