I can definitely understand that, I am not on a side in this regard I just want to know the law as I was told it's a legal issue. If it's more logistical than legal, then so be it, I just want to be well informed.
It was kind of a 'selling point' though before I bought, that I can shoot it (with him present of course) while I wait for my licence. But maybe he told me that before he figured out the logistics around it. It is a fairly new dealer as I understand it.

If it is not illegal , it will not mean that he has to do you that favour.

I have shot about 1000 rounds with my G19 that is at the dealer. They bring my gun to the club shoots and take it back to the safe while I am waiting for my license.(costing me a fortune at R5 a round)

It is not illegal Chapter 6 22 of the Control Act 60/2000

If practical, I suggest having the firearm transferred to another local dealer with an in-house range. I did that and was then able to shoot it whenever I wanted to.

The dealer is the legal holder, the firearm has to be under his direct supervision. If he is ROing can he always be on the same range(bay) as you? Thus a potential conflict!

But that is not the dealers problem to get rid of it, it is your property after you paid for it.

My reference to looking at getting another dealer is simply as a customer you are allowed to shop around and get the service you are looking for. Provided all falls within the law. The guys that purchase self loading rifles that have a very slow turn around license wise will enjoy training/practicing on their investment prior to getting their license. But that would need to be checked if the dealer will let you shoot your investment or not. In the end it’s all up to the customer. Buy from who you want to

Yes, It's pretty much on the other side of town. Dealer attends the course as a range officer though.
Having just got my first fa I would probably have had a very similar attitude. But what I've learnt from this forum and through dealing with my lgs, I wouldn't suggest you stick around witht these guys more, no matter how great they've been.

Either they are lying to you, or they are ignorant of the law, but I suspect and hope the first. Probably as people have suggested just a polite way of saying no, but they are still lying to you.

I used to take mine to the range, located in a sperate part of the building and escorted by staff, all the time while it was still in dealer stock and probably put close to 1500 rounds through it before I took it home. The even offered to take it 30 - 40km to an out door range on several occasions for club shoots or training, but I declinded those due to different reasons.

Of course they are totally within their rights to say no and there is no problem with that at all, but the very least is they could be honest about why they are saying no.

I spoke to the dealer again today to find out what exactly the issue is and I was able to get the information from him.

They used to do it for customers all the time but had to stop due to circumstances beyond their control that I would prefer not to post publicly.

I am satisfied with his answer and fully agree with his decision.
