    Default Aluminum Gas block durability

    Good evening

I was wondering if any members here have experience with aluminum gas blocks on AR rifles?

I have been reading that the expansion of the aluminum gas block relative to the steel barrel (and the different rates that they expand and contract) can cause a failure, sometimes serious ones.

I have a Sig M400 which has a large aluminum gas block up front.

I am thinking about putting a low profile steel gas block in place to avoid this.

The other obvious benefit of this is that I am able to put a full length hand guard on my AR (due to lower profile gas block not blocking the hand guard) but that’s a side issue to the original issue at hand.

    Any input?

    Thanks!

Take it off asap and install a steel one.

Try Stuart at Ihawu, it's not a big job. You can even do it yourself, there are vids on Youtube.

I am nervous to tinker on my own.

I am very OCD with my guns.. as many on this forum will know!

I would be picky about the gunsmith I let near my rifle too.

Maybe ask Alan Henry at Natal Gun Company in Amanzimtoti?
He usually works on bolt action rifles

So when I took my DM4 to MRST they informed me it had an aluminum gas block. It was shit and leaking gas. I was close to having a bolt action. Get rid of it.

MRST know their ARs I recommend them.

    Thanks.

Ya I’m looking for a gun smith who specializes in AR’s.

I’ll give them a shout sometime.
