Re: benzine and oil
I use benzine about once a year when I deep clean that places where the removal of carbon is difficult.
Works great, but strips the parts dry. Make sure you oil it very well after using benzine.
Personally I will not use it more often.

Re: benzine and oil
I am ignorant regarding the "mix" of benzine and oil but benzine is absorbed through your skin and could cause health problems.

Re: benzine and oil
Paint thinners or brake cleaning fluid in spray can might be safer bets for cleaning. Engine cleaner (degreaser) is also handy in a can to blow out gunk.

Re: benzine and oil
Toluene or xylene are often used as safer alternatives, although also toxic, just less so

Re: benzine and oil
Thanks for the advise guys
Go back to cleaning with balistol
Some folk mix the two and clean with the combination
As the benzine dries leaves the oil behind

Re: benzine and oil
A parafin/kerosine and oil mix should do well too, with less health hazard. Add about 5% oil.
We used a similar mix (Jet A1 and Kalgard) to clean weapons when I was in the Army way back before the rinderpest. Worked well then.

Re: benzine and oil
For the most part if well lubed with a modern synthetic you don't get much carbon buildup that won't for the most part wipe off with a paper towl. Even gas pistons don't really build up, and I have seen almost none of the supposed carbon build up on AR15's. Very very seldom a bit of Hoppes or if cheap a bit of thinners could be used. The latter in a very well ventilated area. Yes we all used benzine, petrol, turps, diesel etc years ago but we also got nauseous and or headaches from it. Back then we didn't have the internet to know better.
