    Default Norinco Type 84 "slamfire"?

What causes a Norinco Type 84 to fire two shots in rapid succession with a single depression of the trigger?

It has happened a few times with the Type 84 of a friend.

The rifle is less than a year old and has not fired 500 rounds.

Dirty firing pin channel would be my first guess. Faulty/broken firing pin spring would be my second.
Unlike the Type 56 which has a free floating firing pin, the 84 has a spring loaded pin to prevent it from getting stuck in the forward position. Unfortunately the firing pin hole is often slightly oversized allowing debris to get in and cause the pin to stick.

    Soft commercial primers?

This, I'd also guess that he's been shooting norinco 223 - it's hot stuff

we had some 7.62 reloads that turned out to be loaded very light, seemed the bolt rode the sear without locking
used norinco surplus and never had the issue

Had that happened to me before on a spring loaded firing pin using commercial primers which is a lot softer than military spec rounds.
