    Default What's in your boot?

Not so much EDC as Every Day Boot, but what do you have in your car?

Just finished repacking mine after the last service, and here's what's in the spare wheel well:

    • Spare wheel (Recently checked) with manufacturer-supplied jack, spanner, and screwdriver
    • 2x collapsible emergency triangles (It's tragic how other motorists will drive around them, come stop right behind you, and then hoot at you for not moving at a multi-lane intersection
    • 2x Emergency tyre sealant & reinflation cans (In case the spare is needed on the long road and Murphy strikes again)
    • Jumper leads (Depressingly short, last I used them. The cars had to be positioned with batteries practically touching)
    • Tow strap with U-bolt shackles (Never needed it myself, but once loaned it to some people who were trying to tow with a makeshift wire cable that had stripped)
    • 2l distilled water (For emergency drinking or a radiator, as needed)
    • 2x bottles of oil (My car needs topups between services, so they get rotated)
    • A bunch of nitrile gloves (So I don't get completely filthy if putting on the spare, spilling oil, etc.)
    • Box of assorted fuses (Never needed so far, though my previous car popped one or two)
    • Cable ties (A dozen short and a bunch long)
    • Ratchet tie-downs (Last used when I had a trailer)
    • Small roll of nylon rope (Also used with the tailer)
    • Reflective vest (Because not getting hit by cars at night is always nice)
    • Elastic luggage straps with hooks
    • Kitchen towel roll
    • Roll of loo paper
    • Small pack of tissues
    • Stanley knife

I should probably add a few heavy-duty cloths, maybe some leather work gloves, and a few heat-insensitive first aid items.

    What do you EDB?

    My list:
    Small 12v compressor
    Tyre puncture repair kit
    Can of Fug it
    Ratchet straps
    Bungee cords
Small esbit cooker with spare fuel tablets
2lt water for drinking or washing
    Leatherman
    Folding shovel
    Heavy duty long booster cables
Extra long and heavy duty tow strap with D shackles
Spare cargo pants and a t shirt
One of those rain suit jackets that squishes into a tiny ball
    Toilet roll
    Small bottle of liquid soap
    Folding knife
    Roll of nylon rope
A no. 10,13,15 and 17 spanner and a vice grip
    1lt motor oil
    Spare headlight globe
    A few fuses
Roll of buff tape and duct tape
    Some cotton rags
Small but thick block of strong timber to use under your jack (you'd be surprised that when you get a bad puncture or blow out and need to change the tyre, and there's a crap load of clearance space between the vehicle and the ground, this is especially common for bakkies.

Forgot about the box of matches and a cheapie torch. I usually EDC a torch and have a nitecore on my keyring, but this is just in case.
Come to think of it, a headlamp torch would be much more suitable, you can work hands free

Oh and a 12v LED strip leadlight that plugs into the cigarette lighter and has crocodile clips to connect directly to the battery

    Too much to list.

    Will summarize :

I can, with the contents inside my bakkie, deliver a baby, stop critical bleeding, signal a helicopter, change a tire, fix minor mechanical problems, boil water, refill a radiator, make food, light up the area around my bakkie, sleep comfortably, stay warm, recover a stuck 4x4 or recover myself, survive for at least 3 days with no help.

    Pretty much sums it up.

Edit: I forgot, also have a freezer in the back to keep the cola ice cold.

Do yourself a favour and go to a electrical wholesaler like ACDC or the like and buy 8 m of 160 amp welding cable, with the correct size lugs and build your own long enough jumper cables. Then you can park the 2 vehicles with the batteries on the outside. You can use your old clamps. It is scary if you see how thin the copper cable inside the standard jumper leads.

Just be sure to secure it! If it's loose under your seat, the safety pin can magically come out over time. Then the day you corner too hard, it'll slide over and wack the release lever on something, making a BSSHHHHHHT noise that will convince you that you just cornered so hard you broke your car.
