    What would be the best magnification for an AR, generally shooting up to 300 meters?

    I shoot comfortably to 400m with my Vortex 1-8x24 Strike Eagle

    Definitely something with a true 1x.

    1-6 or 1-8 should serve you well.

    You will find that there are good reasons why some are more expensive than others.
