CCTV Hard drive options
Good day
I am in the process of buying a CCTV system.
The kit does not come with a HDD but they recommend a surveillance HDD.
As far as I understand the surveillance HDD's are made to run 24/7 where a normal drive would run 8-10 hours.
Considering the price difference between the two different type of drives is it really worth it to buy a surveillance drive.
Example:
WD Blue 2TB goes for 799.
WD Purple (Surveillance) 2TB 1345
Seagate Surveillance 2TB 1598
Any advise on this please?
System I am looking at is a AHD 720p, 1.3mp, 8 channel system

Re: CCTV Hard drive options
I use a regular HDD for mine. No issues yet, but you can set the system when and where to record. My system only records when motion is picked up at certain times.

Re: CCTV Hard drive options
I am currently using 4x 330Gb WD (striped) drives which are 10 years old to record 8x IP camera's continually. It holds about 5 days of video. Been running for about 3 years non-stop now without problems.
Unless you have mission critical data on those camera's, I say use the cheapest, biggest one you can afford.

Re: CCTV Hard drive options
As most stated any Hard drive will work. There is no difference between PC and CCTV hard drive although WD is recommended by most. I have used Samsung, Hitachi Seagate, WD and all work well.
Set the CCTV settings to motion record and you can get about 8 times more recording hours. Also block out non relevant movement from trees and cars in a street unless you want to cover that area .
