    Default 55gr V-Max

Would you take on a bush pig with a 55gr v max 223 at say 60 paces, head shot ?
This bullet is supposed to fragment thus very little penetration ?
I normally shoot with a 30-06 , looking at a smaller rifle for various reasons.

Pigs are tough creatures. You mostly have one shot at night. If you do not put it down within 50m then you have an animal suffering and you have to follow up over long distances. The .30 calibers have shown there worth - 303, 308, 30-30, 30-06. Magnum is not needed at the shorter ranges.

If you paying for them then use your 06. I wont shoot with 223 pigs any more because if you slightly off you wont retrieve them most of the time

No. If you insist on using a .223, use a Monolithic.

It will work for a brain shot, however, if you screw up that first shot you now have a very marginal caliber/bullet to kill that pig with. That second shot will most likely be at a moving animal where you can't pick the perfect shot. In my experience, .224 cal varmint bullets sometimes penetrate sufficiently on shoulder shots and often don't.

Use a suitable caliber, if you don't have one use a bullet that will give adequate penetration. Even with the best of bullets, the .224 calibers are small for pigs.

Whether you are paying for the animal or not should have absolutely nothing to do with your choice of caliber or bullet.

As TStone says and just to add a bit.

If you hit a Bush pig in the head as per your scenario, the 55gr v max will kill the pig provided:
.The pig is side on and you hit it perfectly between the eye and ear hole.
.The pig is quartering away from you and you hit it behind the ear hole.
.The pig is quartering towards you and you hit it in or just below the eye.
.The pig is facing you with its head down and you hit it in line or just above the line between the eyes.

    Damn.. half got cut off.

.If the pig is facing you with its head up,forget it. Its head makes a straight line from above the ears to the tip of the nose...entry line to the brain from the nostrils, the V max will not get there.
Body shots will be marginal and normally the pig,if stationary will be in low light conditions or pitch blackness, making precise shots difficult.
Your 3006 is a better choice.

    Thanks everyone
My concerns were the same, I was even concerned with a shot just above the eyes
Seen some u tube nonsense where the v max explodes in a apple.

There is a difference between an angled pig's skull of hard bone and a square-on apple of soft flesh.

What you saw on YouTube is most probably possible, but a pig's head works differently.

    100%
The pigs skull being the concrete wall
My concerns were penetration on the harder parts of the head
You're not always lucky with presentation of an ear shot
