Attacking paramedics carrying guns
“Earlier this month, the South African Emergency Personnel Union called on members to carry firearms to protect themselves.
The Department of Health’s national director for emergency services and disaster management says the move for paramedics to arm themselves while on duty will send the wrong message.”

Re: Attacking paramedics carrying guns
Even though in Afrikaans, this answers the above question as to why they need to carrye a firearm.
Waarom dra ek 'n vuurwapen?
My oupa het vir my gesę: "Boeta, daar kom 'n tyd in elke man se lewe wanneer hy ophou om sy kneukels te breek.
Polisie beskerming is 'n mite.
Uit my oogpunt gesien.

Re: Attacking paramedics carrying guns
A similar article appeared on IOL, except Adele Kirsten weighed in with some bulls*** comment:
https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-afr...ients-18639062
Gun Free SA expressed its shock at Saepu’s call. While conceding that more and more paramedics were being attacked, Gun Free SA director Adele Kirsten said arming paramedics was not the solution.
“We know that arming people increases the potential for violence. (A gun) is a good offensive weapon, which is why you would arm your police force or military, but it’s not a good defensive weapon, so all the evidence shows that you increase your risk of being injured or dying.”
I've emailed Ms Kirsten to ask her for the source of her "evidence"...

Re: Attacking paramedics carrying guns
I have been following these articles and have been tagged on social media. I don't talk much, and even less about my profession. I did not serve in the SANDF. But I have been part of a war for 18 years. Working in EMS must ne the most degrading, unthankful job EVER ! And mostly about ignorance. The public think you attend to MVA and place bandages on victims of natural disasters as in the movies.
I have been told by the oldest, toughest LEO out there that they won't be able to do my job.
If EMS carried dashcams or Body cameras, Youtube will be flooded with incidents that places EMS personnel in grave danger on a dialy basis.
Why is there no mention of the Paramedic who was shot and later died while performing his duties last year ? It's isolated, thus it won't happen again according to the pen pushers.
I won't be a news article on page 3.
Sorry for the rant.

Re: Attacking paramedics carrying guns
We've had this discussion before, a lengthy one.
Paramedics have a specific job to do, saving lives, where every small detail and every second counts.
You tell me how to exercise full situational awareness when you have to do the above?
Personally I cannot see a scenario where a paramedic would be able to do both, you cannot stabilize a patient whiles looking behind you all the time, hence the reason why they get attacked.
Anyways in my area all the paramedics are outsourced, they compete against each other for business, dunno if this model is different for other regions. I say have a dedicated security officer escort paramedics, let the paramedics do their job as best possible, and let the security officer cover their asses in the scenario. The medics can carry all they want then, as backup. Pretty sure this won't happen because it's a game of money, but that still makes it a choice.

Re: Attacking paramedics carrying guns
Messor, what about when they are on the way to respond to a situation and get flagged down and held up?
