Thread: Internet

    Default Internet

    Hi Guys,

I am looking at an alternative internet provider, I currently have Vodacom and I am not happy with their service, very slow. I am situated in Rustenburg rural area so cable of any kind is out of the question, gets stolen.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Big John2
We've been with Afrihost since they took over from iBurst.
Really pleased with both the speed and reliability.
Vodacom reception where we live is sh1t !
Good Luck with whatever you chose and stay well away from anything to do with Telkom [which was the main reason we moved to iBurst in the first place]

Read the fine print of all of them. If they throttle, pass. I have a 2meg/sec uncap and are very happy with it. I check it frequently and it stays at 2 or above for download. We are only 2 people in the house. Mine work with a little dish direct from a nearby tower.

    Goodluck in your search.

Agree with buying SIM cards and testing.
Your speed will depend on reception if you go with LTE

If your speed is constantly slow the biggest problem is probably signal strength, which means it is very likely that all three network's coverage is going to be bad.

But as few already said get prepaid sim for MTN and CellC (all the other providers use the big 3 towers) and see if any of the other 2 gives you better reception. You can also try to lift the LTE modem as high of the ground as possible (like a high window or ceiling), if signal strength and quality is the problem you should see a speed increase.

    As more permanent solution:
If you find the lifting modem to the ceiling gives adequate speed, you try to boost the signal cheaply with an small omni external antenna

If you need a bigger boost:

    or

All three these solutions if you modem does not have an SMA connector for external antenna you are also going to need one of these:

And then lastly if you want to go FU and get good a signal no matter what:

Last one is a LTE modem and antenna combined into a single unit.

My father uses Telkom LTE and he is quite happy. You dont mention what you want to use it for. If its just for normal internet use and occasional updates then this is a good option.

If streaming and lots of downloading is what you are looking for maybe look at iwireless. The people in our complex are very happy with them. Its a line of sight system. So they will do a survey to see if you have line of sight.

I use Bitco but they unfortunately no longer do new residential installations. Its the same system as above and I am very happy with it. Rainy days can cause some issues but most of the time it works flawlessly.
