Default Any Vektor R4/5/6 experts here?

Does anyone have any good sources of information, besides the usual? Finding factual , generic info is not the issue. In depth, practical experience on the different models is. I have questions, that I have no idea where to look for solid info.

I write a book series in English called "the AK47 catalog"... This past year or so, I have photographed a half dozen or so R-4-5 type rifles.

Does anyone know about "cut away"s? I found this rifle in a European museums basement; It was turned over by the police. Anyone know if it is original, or done by a collector in Europe?

The R4s, is the serial number the number on the barrel? The receivers themselves are sterile, with the exception of SAR fire control, and a 3 digit number, which I am guessing is a part number of some sort.

The R5s, it seems to be on the underside of the gas block?

Finally, I only photographed one R6... Shorter then the R5, but the gas block has "R5S" stamped on the bottom... Is this some sort of earlier model?

Is the "poop brown" paint a S.African Military only type thing, or was did it simply depend on when it was made?

    Thanks in advance.

Get hold of the book "Firearms Designed and Manufactured in South Africa". Tactical Quartermaster (TacQM) should be able to sort you out.

The SADF had "cutaway" models for use during musketry training. These are still in use by the SANDF.

There was a "cutaway" model hanging in VLT in Kilnerpark for many years. Do not know if it was a advert/marketing for Denel/LIW. Not sure what happened to it after the shop was sold.

Lately all R4/R5's that we receive are in black Kalguard. My R4 is still brown.

Those cutaways are official and at one stage were not too uncommon. Mine was bought about 10 years ago. The military did them for training.
Peter Wells here will be able to supply more info. There are slight variations, and some believe that rifles were cutaway once unfit for service. There are some differences on the cutaways. Some done by LIW (most?) and maybe some done at unit level.

At one stage in the 1970s SADF armourers did R1 cutaways (partial or complete) as part of their 'trade test' - all parts were hand filed as unit armourers had no access to milling machines, they were really only 'parts replacement specialist'.
I am of the opinion that all R4/5/6 cutaways were done by LIW/DLS as some of the work called for milling. Mine, recently sold, came direct from them and is identical to the others I have seen.
