Default Selecting a knife, cold steel or Camillus?

Hi everyone, I was about to buy a knife for a friend of mine. I am not a fan of knives, or, being honest, I just cannot tell which one is better. I was looking at fixed blade ones, as they seem to be more universal to me. Which brand would you recommend going with, Camillus or Cold Steel?

Here are the particular ones I was looking at:
https://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-Wa.../dp/B00BD5941M - Cold Steel 13TL Warcraft Tanto Knife, Black
    https://www.recreationid.com/camillu...mpn-19095.html - Camillus Knives® - Bush Crafter Knife
Let me know if you want me to post a couple of pics as well....

What will the purpose of the knife be?

And what type of person is your friend? His hobbies, personal preferences etc?

    Also: what is your budget?

    Hey there, here we go:
    Budget: up to $200
He's a hunter, but he's more into waterfowl and turkey, not big game.
Purpose of the knife: I was looking for something practical that he could use, not just a fancy thing that won't cut anything.
    thanks!...

Camo8, you actually asked a real tricky question. It compares to "I would like to buy a friend a vehicle because he likes driving, what do I get him?" The answer can vary from a sportster to a sedan to a truck, depending on his needs and preferences.

If time allows, you would need to do some research which means contacting his prettier half to find out what he has and what he needs and what he (dis)likes.

With a $200 budget you should be able to get him a real good knife.

Please consider a few things: just like one gets car people, one also gets knife people. If he is a knife guy, a good and simple Victorinox pocket knife will probably "weigh" more in his judgement than a cheap chinese 10" bowie.

If you buy him something to use and abuse, tell him that. And in that case, do not buy something overly expensive like a Centenary edition of brand xyz. Buy him something good, yet replaceable. He should not worry too much about letting it work and getting worn.

Your idea of a fixed blade is good; just stay clear of tanto type blades as well as hollow ground blades. They do not work or sharpen well.

Get something with good knife steel. Buck is known for good steel; Puma has great knives too. The Camillus knife you mentioned is hard to sharpen due to the type of cutting edge.

Coldsteel has aome good designs, but so has most known brands. Consider Böker, Zwilling, CRKT, Spyderco, Kershaw as well.

Be careful of knives with gadgets. They usually don't work well.

Except Victorinox - I have an explorer that still works well after 20 odd years.

As with all other tools, use do not abuse.
