Spectre, Johan Greyling explained to me today he needs to cut thread into the breech block at the back end of the canon. As well as cut rifling into the barrel to make it an accurate shooter...he will build these canons exactly like the original builders did it...as usual will I be learning a lot from the master builder himself ..it is a great opportunity to be able to build your own canon and own your canon....I want to build a large heavy canon as well as the medium canon , using the large canon barrel and one of the medium canon barrels ..the carriages will be great to build , I really am excited to do this project...will build an extra medium one for someone who wants to buy a canon for himself...

Thanks Gert. What permits are required to own and shoot a canon? Will the projectiles be round ball or a type of conical bullet?

Original period blackpowder cannons were cast and then drilled. Charles Barret from Ficksburg had two made that way.

Finkelstein, you are quite correct Sir, the Grietjie Boere canon and two other canons were made by Johan Greyling as well..he designed the pattern, turn it from wood and took it to a foundry who sand cast it ...Johan chooses to make these new canons by using seamless manufactured steel tubes ...he wants to cut rifling into the barrel as well..for more accuracy..we can determine our own design by turning these tubes on a large lathe .

How are you going to make sure that there is sufficient metal left for a save cannon? Will it be needed to proof it?

Finkelstein, there are two methods we will make use of..the first being casting the barrel as being done by a sand casting process.
The second method being cnc a barrel from extremely thick steel cast pipe that will accommodate extremely high pressures, much more than what a front loading black powder canon is capable of exerting when firing The first CNC machined cannon barrels will be completed within the next two weeks......

Gert, I would still advise you to have a engineer with the right background make a few calculations. It would be horrible if your thick cast pipe, stressed by machining, turn into a big pipe bomb. Even cast steel can have a defect not visible with the human eye.

If it is a conical projectile, it would need a driving band in order to operate at safe pressures and not to wear the barrel out quickly- much like a monolithic bullet.
The larger cannons I have seen being shot and owned privately all used round lead balls, smoothed by been tumbled in a concrete mixer with charcoal.
