Ripped casing

I was shooting some clay with birdshot and noticed that two of the casing came out of the gun literally ripped. The metal part and the used primer look fine but the whole front of the plastic casing is shredded.

I didn't notice anything unusual whilst shooting, only noticed it when the casing was extracted. Could the wad have caused a brief obstruction??

What chamber length has the shotgun got? That is a 70mm (2 and 3/4 inch) shell.

The shotgun is an Escort Aimguard from Hatsan. As per their website the chamber is 3" or 76mm magnum.

Spoke to a friend of mine. He has seen torn plastic hulls, but the tears were longitudinal and pointed to the plastic deteriorating with age.

1. How are the shells crimped - star or rolled?
2. What make shells?
3. Age of shells?

Could the shorter shell length (70mm) have been the issue here? Not sure how old the shells really are but from purchase max one year. The shells are just ripped not rolled, brand is probably one of the Spanish ones, just standard cheap bird shot.

I've had the same result with ripped cases after shooting slugs the other day in my Zoli pump action shotgun.
As per above photos, shells seem to be " friction" ripped, (my theory), by the wad being compressed against the walls of the case during firing. I do remember though in the past having paper cases ripped the same way but were also heavy loads.
