Propably between 270 Win and 30.06 where the latter is better suited for bushveld with its heavier bullets and the 270 more popular on the open spaces with its flatter trajectory.

Ammunition sales will almost certainly have the 30-06, 270 and 243 listed. It all depends on the animals you hunt most and where you hunt them. The 308 will also appear in there to tbe sure. Why are you asking Daniel?

I'd say 7.62X39 and .303 in the "informal" sector.

Dave / ThomasT, airing our view from cross the border i agree.

However, the 300 WM is making serious headway into Namibia for the top spot in plains game hunting IMO. You know - here in the South, Springbok and Gemsbok is called "Horizon-bokke" due to the distance at which they are hunted, and this nick-name is not to be taken lightly - just ask PMC....

fhm - I love my 243 but it runs out of steam in the endless landscape of namibia. 270 does the job but I can see why the chaps are turning to the 300s. Those big buck take some knocking over!

Big tough animals at long range. This is a job for the magnums. In SA I would be surprised if the 30-06 is not on the top of the popularity pile. Also do not forget the .303 British. Still very popular in the bushveld.

I hear you, back in the days - i've cut my hunting teeth on my dads old (understatement) .303
However, dunno why but in my expereince the hunting farms here in Nam is sceptical to guys hunting with the .303
The coupe of farms i have hunted so far - when discussing hunting and calibers in general with the landowners - they 'shy away' from hunters bringing .303's and the reasons handed to me was that they (farmers) experienced too many wounded animals by hunters with .303's

Now this can / will probably become a new thread on it's own..... but what tickles me, is whether there are any supporting facts surrounding this 'downgrading' of a rifle / calibre which most of us have shot, and which 99 % of the old timers used back then to bring the bacon back home?

Just wondering where this all started for the infamous .303
