If I were to do things over, I would do the following:

    1. Enroll in a hunting course +/- €1800 (also a good way to learn German!)
    2. Buy the correct safe required by law +/- €1000
    3. After passing the hunting exam: Pay for the 3 Year hunting licence and insurance. I just renewed mine for a total of €190
    4. Buy guns :)

A conservative estimate is that it would cost you in the region of €2990 / R47,300 to get to the point where you can actually buy a long gun.

If you want to reload, add another €500 for the reloading course & exam, and the permit fee.

I would bring things like reloading presses, scales, dies etc.

You also have to keep in mind that most shooting ranges are indoors and allow for very little other than mindlessly shooting at a piece of paper.

Range time is also expensive. Like €60 per hour expensive. The one range close to my home is €100 per hour. If you get a couple of friends to join you, you can split the cost.

I’ve taken up clay pigeon shooting since coming to Germany. It’s the only real chance I have to shoot outside. I would for instance get more use and enjoyment out of a high end shotgun, than out of a high end AR 15.

Couple of ARs and a specific pistol, Ruger 1911.

    Oh yeah, but but...

What about ARs huh, in 308 and 223?

Seriously, I'm convinced. Will be hard to have to sell them, but will get something on par that side.
