Re: Rifle barrels that will withstand a barrel burner caliber - 6.5X68S
Fortunately the 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser barrel is 28" inches long...it is quite heavy since it is a magnum sportster profile...the same as the 8x68S , although the 8x68S is only 26" inches long..

Re: Rifle barrels that will withstand a barrel burner caliber - 6.5X68S
Used in Namibia in the south by German speaking farmers -- for long range Springbuck hunts
Too my mind an overbore and overkill powder burner ( in the realm of the 220 Swift )
That said as far as "barrel-burner" is concerned
How often are you planning on using the rifle ?
Is this going to be a purely hunting rifle ?
How many shots are you going to put through it -- in a year ?
How many shots and how long do you think before you need to replace a barrel ?
Perhaps your concerns about "shooting out a barrel" are not as critical as you think ?

Re: Rifle barrels that will withstand a barrel burner caliber - 6.5X68S
Brenneke , it is not so much about the 6.5 x 68S caliber as it is about the building procedures, I want to melt my own aluminum, cast it is large blocks , mill a chassis from it ....it will be a military type sniper rifle set up...I want to design the whole chassis and build it myself ...the 6.5 x 68S caliber I think will suites the chassis set up just fine...a fun project/fun shooting rifle ..I would like to shoot at ghongs..maybe a few will shatter when I hit it with the 6.5 x 68S caliber rifle on club shooting days..
I will be bringing in another 6.5 caliber barrel, a Shilen barrel in next year ..at that time I would be nearly completed with the 8x68S and 6.5 x55 Swedish Mauser builds as classic hunting rifles...

Re: Rifle barrels that will withstand a barrel burner caliber - 6.5X68S
Sounds very much like a heavy competition long range bench rest machine ?
Building -- you are most fortunate to have the ability and resources to do this
Most fascinating
You do know that there is an 8x60 ( Mauser ) as well as an 8x63 ( Swede / Bofors ) and an 8x64 ( Brenneke)
6.5 choices are somewhat limited in the longer length cartridges
I am most interested in your procedure for importing a barrel -- much less expensive in the US where they produce thousands
and
Have thousands / millions of people that can easily purchase and own a firearm.

Re: Rifle barrels that will withstand a barrel burner caliber - 6.5X68S
Brenneke, the 6.5 x 68S is a great caliber barrel burner if used shooting a long string of rounds..as is most other calibers when doing this type of shooting...something I never do...
The only reason I bring in barrels is for myself with friends in the USA that is visiting hunters and is wiling to give up space in their bags to accommodate me in this way..I then use available SAPS documentation to register the barrel brought in for me...
I have currently brought is a 8x68S PAC-NOR barrel, and a 6.5 caliber Shilen barrel..for myself ...
I believe every person can do it this way...it just seems persons are extremely afraid to bring in an item like a barrel...there is no law/regulation/rules stated that I am not allowed to ask a friend to bring me an item from the USA....there is certain requirements....a barrel without a chamber or thread for a chamber is not seen as a rifle barrel in the USA...telescopes that is not a military item is just a telescope...anyone can bring these items to me when I purchase it via PAYPAL...
Now it is up to me to get them register on the CFR...will give feedback in this regards...
I as a South African citizen really am trying to support the South African businesses by purchasing from them...I really do....
Unfortunately when there is a difference of three to five thousand or more rand for an item I have to pay ere in South Africa like a barrel from Truvelo or Safari/Outdoors I am just not prepared to pay so much extra money for an item I can get much more affordable in the USA...THIS goes for a rifle scope as well..costs of a decent rifle scope in South Africa is just unbelievable /unacceptable here is SA....scopes in the USA, high end market scopes are much , much more affordable in the USA...
