Newbie question - DIY ammo vs dealer ammo?
Hello everyone.
I am based in East Rand in JHB and i am new to this site, I recently bought a Beretta APX 9mm.
Sorry for these newbie questions.
I went shooting range a few times and got the shock of my life after seeing the price of ammo.... Last I went shooting was back in the early 2000's and I recall a 9mm was roughly R2+- and now its easily R5+.
Is there any dealer that sells cheaper 9mm? Like under R5 each (R250 per 50)?
Other options is to DIY, the dealer (Dave Sheer & China Shield) said the cost of DIY can easily save R2-3 per bullet. Which is a massive saving for me as I am a newbie and I have been going through rounds trying to get posture right etc.
What are you thoughts on DIY? How is the quality and risk of DIY? Would it damage my gun?
Any insight from you pros would be appreciated XD

Many of us reload; the old rule is that it won't save you money - you will just shoot more for the same amount
Reloading saves you enough to make it worthwhile. Please read the threads on reloading.
Most important things:
1. Read a lot.
2. Work carefully - with an experienced person and then alone.
3. Shoot over a chrony.
4. Enjoy!

Hello iLovePie.
Although I am no pro, the only insight I can offer is to not call the cheap bullets you make at home DIY. People are just going to make fun of you.
I buy 9mm bullets for just over R1-00 per bullet, but think I get discount because I buy in bulk (1,000 at a time).
PS: You might also consider posting an introduction as per forum rules. (12 minutes from joining to posting intimate and complicated questions without an introduction is just too soon).

Reloaded ammo can be just as reliable as factory rounds (sometimes more reliable ala Maxtech).
Read up on reloading and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
Reloaded ammo will never damage your gun IF it's done right.

Re: Newbie question - DIY ammo vs dealer ammo?
It all depends on how much you want to invest and how much you’re planning to shoot. You can get S&B now for R995/250 in the party pack which is an amazing deal IMO. And if you’re clever, you save the cases and come sell it here for R1/ea to recoup some of your cost.
That makes a round roughly R3 after selling the case.
Reloading costs me about R1.60 each excluding the case. (124gr RN CMJ, S&B primer and S121).
This is excluding the labor, reloading machine and time which by far is the most expensive part.
So as with everything in life, you’ll have to go do some calculations to see which is the most viable option for you.

If you shoot less than 1000 a year it's better to just use factory S&B party packs, unless you're willing to write off the cost of the reloading equipment which could be anywhere from R5000 to R15000.
If you're going to shoot a lot (IPSC or IDPA) then reload.
