5.56x45 AP does exist but it is difficult to find on the market and may be unlawful for civilians to possess in some places.
Interesting finding regarding the penetration of the 62gr VS 55gr ball.
I am aware of the steel shank in the core of the SS109 and the only reason I refer to it as AP, is most of the online retailers in the U.S call it AP ammo.
True 5.56 AP ammo usually has a black tip with a solid steel core, the stuff I have seen was 55gr made by Fiocchi IIRC.

    Thanks for the correction Ikor.

They do that to try and get gullible people to pay more for it...it is a dime a dozen here however (OK...not THAT cheap but it IS coming down in price), so most are unsuccessful...thankfully.

yep the problem is that with refrence to the word: "calibre" the 308win and 7,62x52 are difrent calibres. so in terms of the law if you are caught with 7,62 with a 308win licence, you might as well be in posession of 505gibbs ammo becuse the calibre differ. having said that the problem is that where did you get the 7,62 ammo in your posession.

Nope because the 308 is capable of firing 7.62x51mm ammunition. Just like I can posses 38 spl ammo on my 357 Magnum license.

Brendan AFAIK one cannot possess South African Military ammo. Since long before the FCA.

    What BigT said.

So I went to apply for new licences. Pistol number one, 32 ACP. "No sir, the system says it's a 7,65mm" "OK, change it". Pistol number two, 7,65mm. "No sir, the system says it's 32 ACP"...

I dunno about that T, I have regularly come across military ammo sold by suppliers which is obviously legal to possess. I don't think that argument has any validity if surplus ammo is available and sold by suppliers. May be wrong but I doubt it.

    Brendan;

Just how obvious is 'obvious'? You might check that if mil. surp. ammo is a no-no.

Lots of cops and admin guys have no idea of these differences but these are, in fact, two different calibers. I personally think the situation is insane, but that means nothing to the law.

In the case of 5.56 it will shoot .223 all day but a .223 chamber (and there are many that claim to be 5.56 that are not!) won't do well with 5.56.

The issue is ignorance, but that never stopped government in the past...in SA or anywhere else!

All well and good until you get checked by people who dot 'i's' and cross 'T's'...then you may sing a different tune. (?)

have to agree with ikor, the 7,62 and the 308win are not the same caliber in the purist form of the word. so now you are open to the interpretation of the law. rather avoid such situations. we as gun owners and hunters have an magnifying glass over our shoulders. lets not give them stones to throw.

having said that i believe that most(i hope!) state prosecutors will not pursue this matter as far as a criminal charge, but the question would rather be how is that you are in possession of restricted military articles. IMHO, a situation that is unfair but nether the less one that i would take great care to avoid.

anyway 308 ammo are of the less expensive ammo, let alone when you reload.

No the law says you must have a gun capable of using the ammo not the same calibre. See 38 spl 357 mag analogy.
