Never seen either being sold in a shop (and have seen milsurp ammo being sold in many gun shops here in S.A). I have confirmed that military ammo is legal to possess as a civilian in S.A, provided the source is not illegal. NGA has in the past sold PLENTY 5.56 milsurp ammo to dealers, which was legitimately obtained from PMP and others. It is thus legal.

That NGA ammo was demilled. Bullets pulled and swapped.

That was just an example. SS109 is definitely military ammo, but has been sold by a number of suppliers and shops.

I think we are getting to the bottom of this issue. You may not have SA Military Ammo AFAIK (Except for 303) but any imported surplus military ammo is OK.

Brendan...do us a favour via your connection and contact PMP and see if they will supply you SA Military 9x19, 5.56, 7.62x51 and see what they say. I do not think that they will supply you any nor will the military or police sell you 'surplus'. The SA Military destroy surplus / old ammo by melting them down into brass and lead and then sells the lead and brass back to PMP (or who ever on tender). Just a point of interest...the SA Military has big melting pots and a conveyor belt feeds life ammo into these pots where the ammo gets melted down into the brass and lead...note live ammo gets chucked into these pots.

Would be cool to see the little pops, if any, made by the live ammo :)

The reason why I know this is because I once had a conversation with a senior PF member that is stationed at a particular base where this is done. And yes...they do pop as they heat up in the pot. What happens is the state procures ammo in batches of say 10Million. This then gets stored all over and then gets issued. Every now and again these stored batches gets checked to verify performance. If the performance drops and irregulaties are encountered, the batch gets directed to the pot.

Also ammo that gets issued to the troops in the DRC are exchanged on a regular basis and then the returning ammo goes to the pot. The reason for this is apparently the climate impact on the ammo and thus they play safe.

The sad part of this is that the majority of the ammo that goes to the pot is still good and the anomolies detected in the tests tends to be low and would be acceptable for say a sport shooter...but I think they say rather safe than sorry.

You must hear the stories about how they destroy other munitions and how unstable some of the stuff gets!!!! Scary stuff!!!!

Well, this thread has become quite interesting. Ok, I've read somewhere that Camdix in Krugersdorp sells surplus, can anyone confirm this?
On the other hand, if the 7,62 ammo is going to damage my 308 rifle I will rather not go that way. Let me rather ask this question, out of curiosity what is the cheapest 308 ammo you can get. I dont always shoot the cheapest but it would be interesting to know.

The ammo that Camdix has is de-milled.

I think that 7.62 will be fine in your .308 but it may not be the case the other way around.

Oh so they do have, and is the casing 7.62? Price? And de-milled means that the military powder has been replaced by commercial powder?
